Security Filings Elasticsearch and Kibana
The following document describes the current Elasticsearch and Kibana setup for security filings.
The Project
The current setup relies on manual setup of:
- The Virtual Machine inside the archipelo-dev project on GCP
- Elasticsearch Docker container
- Kibana Docker container
- Docker compose
- Exposing Kibana via NGINX
Environment Variables
To set the environment variables a file called .env
should be created with the
following contents:
# Password for the 'elastic' user
ELASTIC_PASSWORD=d329bd32d23d323d23d32
# Password for the 'kibana_system' user
KIBANA_PASSWORD=d31d29722g3281ef3257cd723
STACK_VERSION=8.10.4
CLUSTER_NAME=sec-es-cluster
LICENSE=basic
ES_PORT=9200
KIBANA_PORT=5601
MEM_LIMIT=2073741824
COMPOSE_PROJECT_NAME=sec
Docker Compose
For setting up the whole stack we use Docker Compose. The configuration should be stored
in the docker-compose.yml
file and should look as follows:
version: "2.2"
services:
setup:
image: docker.elastic.co/elasticsearch/elasticsearch:${STACK_VERSION}
volumes:
- certs:/usr/share/elasticsearch/config/certs
user: "0"
command: >
bash -c '
if [ x${ELASTIC_PASSWORD} == x ]; then
echo "Set the ELASTIC_PASSWORD environment variable in the .env file";
exit 1;
elif [ x${KIBANA_PASSWORD} == x ]; then
echo "Set the KIBANA_PASSWORD environment variable in the .env file";
exit 1;
fi;
if [ ! -f config/certs/ca.zip ]; then
echo "Creating CA";
bin/elasticsearch-certutil ca --silent --pem -out config/certs/ca.zip;
unzip config/certs/ca.zip -d config/certs;
fi;
if [ ! -f config/certs/certs.zip ]; then
echo "Creating certs";
echo -ne \
"instances:\n"\
" - name: es01\n"\
" dns:\n"\
" - es01\n"\
" - localhost\n"\
" ip:\n"\
" - 127.0.0.1\n"\
> config/certs/instances.yml;
bin/elasticsearch-certutil cert --silent --pem -out config/certs/certs.zip --in config/certs/instances.yml --ca-cert config/certs/ca/ca.crt --ca-key config/certs/ca/ca.key;
unzip config/certs/certs.zip -d config/certs;
fi;
echo "Setting file permissions"
chown -R root:root config/certs;
find . -type d -exec chmod 750 \{\} \;;
find . -type f -exec chmod 640 \{\} \;;
echo "Waiting for Elasticsearch availability";
until curl -s --cacert config/certs/ca/ca.crt https://es01:9200 | grep -q "missing authentication credentials"; do sleep 30; done;
echo "Setting kibana_system password";
until curl -s -X POST --cacert config/certs/ca/ca.crt -u "elastic:${ELASTIC_PASSWORD}" -H "Content-Type: application/json" https://es01:9200/_security/user/kibana_system/_password -d "{\"password\":\"${KIBANA_PASSWORD}\"}" | grep -q "^{}"; do sleep 10; done;
echo "All done!";

Starting the Stack
To start the stack just run the following command:
docker-compose up -d
Stopping the Stack
To stop the stack and delete all resources run the following command:
docker-compose down -v
Setting up NGINX
To setup NGINX create the sec
in the /etc/nginx/sites-enabled
directory with
the following contents:
server {
server_name sec.archipelo.com;
location / {

proxy_cache_bypass 1;
add_header X-Frame-Options DENY;
add_header X-Content-Type-Options nosniff;
add_header X-XSS-Protection "1; mode=block";
add_header Last-Modified $date_gmt;
add_header Cache-Control 'no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate, proxy-revalidate, max-age=0';
